Brandi Milne’s “Before I Hide Away” at Corey Helford Gallery

 

Brandi Milne is an artist on a great path. Her work has progressed trifold throughout her career, and so her solo show at Corey Helford Gallery was quite the celebration. Especially, since according to the price sheet, the entire exhibit was sold out before the opening reception. Most of the paintings featured romantic winter scenes of faun fables that had a uniquely elegant and soft feminine quality to them. However, some of my favorite details were the subtle cursive whispers she painted in to give each landscape a narrative that seemed to be taken directly from one of her characters’ diaries.

If you take a prolonged look at the paintings after appreciating them for her skill and storytelling ability, there seems to be a connection to the artist and the number 3. For example, a good handful of the paintings have three characters in them, like the one of a girl, bear, and a deer, or even the one of three girls riding a horse. I didn’t get a chance to talk to the artist at the opening, so I’m not sure if it was a subconscious coincidence or a measured intent. Or, it could just my own paranoia, which is always fun to run with.
