Eat a Taco, See Great Art – Restitution Press at C.A.V.E. Gallery

In a truck. At a restaurant. From a drive-thru. Nothing quite gets me as excited as a delicious, mouth-watering taco. Or should I say tacos – plural.

Living in Los Angeles basically means residence in taco heaven. From big-chain restaurants to hole-in-the wall eateries, you can find tacos practically everywhere in the city. And visitors who walked into C.A.V.E. Gallery Saturday night saw these iconic L.A. taco joints in the artwork of street artist Restitution Press, aka Ryan Graeff. His show “Restitution Taco,” fittingly supported by website L.A. Taco, explores the Angeleno love of tacos and the iconic signs, streets and images that make up the city of Angels. Tito’s Tacos, Broadway Avenue, La Taquiza are sprinkled through the layered, mixed media canvases. There’s even an appearance from the Kogi korean taco barbeque food truck.

Restitution Press gives these familiar images his own twist with a bright color palette and unique elements – if you look closely at the upper left corner of Liquor Lotto you can spot a few scratchers mixed in with the rest of the piece. Outside the show, the No Que No truck doled out freshly-made tacos, the truck’s exterior decorated by Restitution himself. The artist took the best of the city and brought it to the canvas, from a love of food to a love for the city’s most iconic streets. Here’s to a place with delicious tacos and fantastic art.
