CARTWHEEL Pop Up: Mini Art Fair with Events and Entertainment

Posted by

popupcollageIt’s not just art at the second annual CARTWHEEL Pop Up  at PROJECT Gallery.  Since the eight artists were drawn from art fairs across the country and are coming to Los Angeles for the event, CARTWHEEL founder Cindy Schwarzstein thought it would be fitting to create a mini art fair environment with special events every day. She explains:

Art fairs have developed and become not only about great art, but about the interaction between artists and attendees, and experiences that expand the art while highlighting the fair’s location.

PROJECT Gallery which opened in December is located in the heart of Hollywood, so it seemed natural to pull in elements from the Cahuenga Corridor which has a lively night life, as well as being a burgeoning center for health and well-being. The majority of artists will be in attendance for the opening. Along with Lydia Emily who lives in Los Angeles and Roy Gonzales from Laguna, Scott Michael Ackerman will be in from Woodstock, New York;  Evo Love is traveling from Miami (and will be creating a special installation for the Pop Up). Corey Hagberg is making the trek from Rockford, Illinois; and Lyle Cabrajal is traveling down from Portland.  And artists will be on hand at PROJECT Gallery throughout the weekend, giving art lovers a chance to connect with the artists.

Friday night CARTWHEEL and PROJECT Gallery present CARTWHEEL Unplugged, with Kashmere playing a free acoustic set during the gallery’s evening hours.

Throughout the weekend,  Corey Hagberg will be creating a mural in Silver Lake. Follow us on instagram @Cartwheel_Art and on Facebook for more updates!

On Saturday day from 1pm-5pm, PROJECT Gallery converts to a special yoga studio with free yoga from Cytokine and complementary juice tasting. No need to bring a mat: Lululemon is providing them!

The feel good vibe continues on Sunday with Family Day at the CARTWHEEL Pop Up, coinciding with the Hollywood Farmers’ Market, with both art and music collaboration opportunities for the kids, and treats provided by Fig & Highland.  CARTWHEEL featured artists and guest artists, including Jane Cantillon from Dick & Jane Family Orchestra will be leading the art workshop from noon to 2pm (art supplies provided!), while Nick-I from Common Sense and other guests perform from 1pm to 3pm–kids are welcome to join in the music. Sunday’s family day is also a benefit for Surfers Healing, which enriches the lives of people living with autism by exposing them to the unique experience of surfing.

Cindy explains why it was important for her to do a family day  and benefit for Surfers Healing:

Sunday’s Family Day  with art and music, coinciding with the Hollywood Farmers Market, on March 24th, includes fundraising efforts for Surfers Healing, my charity of choice for CARTWHEEL, based on the personal experience I have with the organization’ events attended by my son Spencer who is on the autism spectrum. I’m really excited because Spencer will be there, too!

(And there’s an additional tie-in: Surfers Healing founder Israel [Izzy] Paskowitz is the brother of  Salvador Paskowitz, who co-created the Surf Crazed comic series with CARTWHEEL featured artist Roy Gonzalez. Gonzalez designed the art work for the San Clemente cult favorite band Johnny and the Monsters; another Paskowitz brother, David, played in Johnny and the Monsters. And they all knew Cindy, who was the production manager for Surf Crazed when it was produced by Action Sports Retailers.)

With its schedule of art and community-related events, the CARTWHEEL Pop Up at PROJECT Gallery gives attendees a full immersion in an art fair/festival atmosphere, right in the center of Hollywood!
