IMG_9828As special event for LA Art Show guests, Cartwheel Art presents the Arts District Mural Tour. Taking place on Saturday, January 18, the tour will provide an opportunity for guests of the LA Art Show to see and learn about the Los Angeles’ mural history and future, a living extension of the Isabel Rojas-Williams’ curated exhibition and Art Show Dialog panel discussion “Will L.A. Reclaim Its Title as ‘The Mural Capital of the World’ ” and of the city of Los Angeles.

The curated tour of murals in the Los Angeles Arts District begins at 11:15am at the LA Art Show, Booth 152, where Rojas-Williams will discuss her exhibition before the group  departs on a shuttle to the Arts District. Tour guests will be provided a souvenir map that lists the murals, along with points of interest and businesses in the Arts District.

Once in the Arts District visitors will meet Steve Grody– graffiti documentarian, lecturer and author of the book Graffiti L.A–who will be co-hosting the tour with Cindy Schwarzstein, Cartwheel Art founder,  to view the over seventy murals that the arts district offers.  The tour will also stop at local businesses that support and exhibit local artists: At the tour’s start, they’ll visit URBAN RADISH, the Arts District’s first community market and eatery; and at the tour’s end, they’ll stop in Angel City Brewery, which brews old-world, small-batch, craft beers for a pint or soft drinks.

Participants are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunblock, and/or hats, as this a ten block walking tour in a safe, but urban/industrial downtown area with minimal shade.

The Downtown Los Angeles Arts District features many murals by artists on  LA Art Show exhibition and on the Dialog panel, including RISK, MEAR ONE, Allison Hueman Torneros, and Augustine Kofie. The LA Arts District also features murals by Shepard Fairey, Vyal, Dabs & Myla, Anthony Lister, How and Nosm, JR and Ron English, among other acclaimed artists.

Cartwheel Art founder and Los Angeles River Arts & Business Association board member Cindy Schwarzstein explains the genesis of the tour:

We are a media partner for the LA Art Show and have a strong connection to Los Angeles urban art and the downtown murals, having worked with Isabel Rojas-Williams and the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles along with other organizations to get the Los Angeles Mural Ordinance passed. The Mural Ordinance, which allows for new murals to be created and our older historic murals to be restored, is a vital piece of arts legislation that further cements Los Angeles’ place as a major art city. It’s exciting to be able showcase Los Angeles’ downtown murals for LA Art Show attendees with this tour designed to dovetail with Isabel’s curated exhibition and her Dialogs panel at the LA Art Show.

Cartwheel Art’s service and events division produces pop-ups, longer term gallery events and special events, as well as providing media and promotional support for the art community. The tours sponsors include the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles,  Los Angeles River Arts & Business Association,  Angel City Brewery URBAN RADISH, Linear City DevelopmentLos Angeles Downtown Arts District Space, and  Steve Grody.

Space on this free tour is limited. LA Art Show attendees can RSVP to cindy@CARTWHEELart.com.
