So much life is wasted after we love it to death. The pets and livestock that are sacrificed for our needs often go to waste, a tragedy on many levels, but not in this case. On Friday May 2nd, La Luz De Jesus hosts the 3rd Biennial Rogue Taxidermy Show, a celebration of the lives and deaths of animals around us using “recycled” remains. “This,” as they say, “Is Not Your Granddaddy’s Taxidermy Show.” You see, from a whole list of normally discarded bodies, art has been made. Art which plays upon the ideas of mortality and the value of life. In this case, the remains that make up the art were borrowed from discarded livestock, destroyed nuisance animals, casualties of the pet trade, and animals that have expired from natural causes. No animals were killed for this show.

Especially exciting is an opportunity to witness a taxidermy demonstration using prepared and raw materials. This educational moment will take place from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sat. May 3rd in the gallery itself. Katie, Divya, and Laura will use the demonstration time to answer any questions you may have about the art of preserving dead critters.

The opening reception takes place on Friday May 3rd at La Luz De Jesus Gallery, located in the back of Wacko/Soap Plant near the intersection of Hollywood and Vermont. Opening night gallery hours are from 8-11 p.m. La Luz De Jesus has normal gallery operating hours Monday to Wednesday 11:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday 11:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:00-10:00 p.m., and Sunday noon to 6 p.m.
