Art Expo San Diego debuts this year, July 24 to 26 as a unique addition/alternative to ComiCon. Held on the same weekend (and close by) to both ComiCon  and Gam3rCon, Art Expo San Diego offers a free, art-intensive weekend featuring a curated selection of world-class artists and DIY creatives who specialize in the imaginative creation of graphic novels, hand-made objects, zines, prints, original artwork, toys, silkscreens and collectibles.

ArtExpo SD takes place at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design, aka the Wonderbread Factory Campus, 171 14th Street, San Diego, July 25 10am to 9pm,  and 26th, 10 am to 7pm, with an opening reception on July 25 from 6pm to 9pm. (There’s a VIP preview Thursday July 24–you can find out more by going to ArtExpo SD VIP Party Facebook page).

ArtExpo SD is a win/win–it’s free to the public with shuttles to and from Gam3rCon and ComiCon, and booths for artists are very reasonably priced (and include WiFi and electricity). For more details about exhibiting at ArtExpo SD, while space is available, please email event curator, Mark Murphy.

We at Cartwheel Art are especially excited about ArtExpo SD because it falls on our three-year anniversary and we’ve joined them as media sponsors!

Along with the selection of artists and creatives curated by Mark Murphy of Murphy Design–including Cathie Bleck, Joel Nakamura, Richard Downs, Mark Todd,  and Esther Pearl Watson–Cartwheel Art will be presenting three contributor/artists showing work. Keith Dugas and Lauren Oliver will be showing their paintings, including new work and Daniel Rolnik will be showing prints, including his own, created by Intellectual Property Prints which he runs with fellow artist Ryan McIntosh.

Cartwheel Art contributor Dahlia Jane will be showing a selection of fine art works that challenge the stereotypical portrayals of femininity in popular culture, including works by sculptor Matthew Levin and painters Jaclyn Alderete and Lara Dann that offer insight into the surreality of female identity

Cartwheel Art editor Lisa Derrick brings a selection of artists from throughout Southern California, including Katherine Brannock, Roberto Gutiérrez, Krown 187, Alex Defer Kizu and Rafael Reyes whose work falls into the genre of Dark Progressivism, art that moves literally and figuratively out of our area’s urban shadows.

With over fifty artists in a loft environment at one of San Diego’s most exciting locations–the Wonderbread Factory repurposed as a university campus focused on design and architecture–ArtExpo SD’s launch promises to bring together a wide range of both locals and out of town visitors who love fresh art, zines and DIY.
