Experience three days of murals, music, workshops, panels and art during the first annual Barrio Roots Street Art Fest in the City of Bell, celebrating bi-national expression and relationships between Mexico, Mexican-American artists, and youth in the greater Los Angeles area.

This free, three day event focuses on art and creativity, with workshops in musical production featuring the HNDP Mobile Music Composition Workshop, and sessions in artistic photography, drawing, community muralism, calligraphy, stenciling and skateboard design. These workshops are free, and you can register for them on the Barrio Roots Street Art website.

Additionally, on Saturday MaMua will perform their Strange Enemy improv show, and DJ Chucuchu will play infectious Latin rhythms, creating a Familia Cumbia Fiesta vibe.

Featured mural artists include The Mac, Caché, Nuke, Shent, Man One, HEX, and Sand One, and a special exhibition will focus on pioneering Chicano artist Chaz Bojórquez who broke the boundary between graffiti and gallery, opening the eyes of the world to the beauty and tradition inherent in Cholo nativist art.

Festival organizers explain:

Form, technique, monumentality and especially the themes portrayed in the work of the invited artists are very powerful and convey this powerful message about how this important sector of society feels. These elements are the key to analyze and understand today’s Mexican-American identity. By inviting the community to join in the creative process we hope to promote mural painting among talented young people.

The Mexico-U.S. border’s identity is historically and culturally rich and yet it is rarely understood or appreciated. By promoting this type of festival, we aim to spread this richness as well as all the values represented in this unique artistic expression and to make it available for young people living there.

The LA Barrio street Art Fest is presented by the Consulate General of Mexico, Mexico’s Secretary of External Relations, Institutos del Mexicanos en el Exterior, State Senator Ricardo Lara and the 33rd Senate District, the City of Bell, and HABITAJES Centro de Estudios y Acciones sobre el Espacio Público.

The LA Barrio Roots Street Art Festival takes place at the Bell Community 6250 Pine Avenue, Bell, CA 90201, USA. A complete schedule of workshops and events is on the website.
