It’s a damned good friday with show you shouldn’t passover tonight at La Luz de Jesus: Paul Koudounaris “Memento Mori” and Scott Hove “Pussy Jihad” bring together sex, death, religion, nihilism and resurrection, a show that eclipses all others just in time for the Easter bunny to roll away the stone–and if he sees his shadow, there’s 2,000 more years of war…

Koudounaris–a frequent Cartwheel Art contributor–returns to the gallery at La Luz de Jesus with his latest, and by all accounts greatest, macabre display. The world’s leading photographer of the visual culture of death, his new book Memento Mori represents a kind of magnum opus. Having traveled the world for over a decade documenting the use of human bones in sacred contexts, he has distilled beautifully morbid photos from over 70 countries into a single package, filling the new book with the best-of-the-best, from Indonesian burial caves, to gilded Asian mummies, to jeweled German skeletons, to Bolivian skull festivals. And the finest of these images will be on display as part of a show which will open with a book signing tonight Friday, April 3 at 7pm.

Scott Hove delivers proof that the cake is a lie and the pussy has power: Sweetly decorated pink desserts that point out the ultimately, cowardly ethos behind religious, fundamentalist positions–using Pussy as an explosive weapon. Think about the word “pussy” and the various contexts in which it is used: as a sexual term, as an insult meaning cowardly, as the source of pleasure, as a purring pet. Then enjoy the show at La Luz as your mind gets stroked by the two thought-provoking artists.
