2016 LA Art Show Panels
Dialogs LA, the free panels at the LA Art Show always provide a stimulating adjunct to the art fair itself. This year, there is a focus on collecting, beginning with –for the first time ever at an art fair– a panel on the process of valuing and pricing fine art wil be made transparent wiht art historian, publisher, and appraiser, Peter Hastings Falk. His discussion, An Insider’s View on Valuing and Pricing Fine Art, kicks off the Dialogs LA series at 1pm on Thursday. Other panels on collecting include:
•What Your Art Dealer Never Taught You About Due Diligence and Preserving Your Investment in Art. Learn from renowned painting restorer Scott M. Haskins as he provides tips on due diligence when buying art, the care of and curating your collection. Friday, 2pm
•The Agency and Art: A discussion about curation of the luxury home and working with private clients, creating collections and the home as art, with Hoojung Lee, Director of Art All Ways and director of Korean Art Affairs at the LA Art Show, John Wolf, Art Advisor at John Wolf Fine Art, Annie Wharton, Art Consultant at Annie Wharton Art Consulting, moderated by Paul Lester, a founding partner of The Agency, Luxury Brokerage and Lifestyle Company. 1pm Sunday
•Investing in Art For Beginners: This lecture will discuss the basics of buying art, how investing works and what to expect, as well as budget guidelines. 2pm Sunday
Los Angeles’ murals and the commercialization of street art are the subjects of two panels. On Friday, author and curator and dean, College of Arts and Humanities, Point Loma Nazarene University, G. James Daichendt presents The Commercialization of Street Art. Joining Daischendt are Warren Brand from Branded Arts, arts journalist Ed Fuentes, PR maven Heidi Johnson of Hijinx PR, artists Jennifer Korsen and Thrashbird, art philosopher Shelby Moser, and Gabba Gallery’s director Jason Ostrow. This panel will explore the benefits and drawbacks that street artists have encountered as the movement has gained popularity and prominence in pop culture, no doubt touching on the many artists of color whose pioneering work is overlooked and/or marginalized in the commercialization process.
Isabel Rojas-Williams moderates Mural Renaissance in DTLA: Challenges of Expression and Legacy, presented by Mural Conservancy Los Angeles, in conjunction with their exhibition “From the Streets to Canvas,” curated by Isabel Rojas-Williams. Panelists including renowned muralist Kent Twitchell, MCLA’s Board president attorney Eric Bjorgum (Karish & Bjorgum PC), Jessica Lall (South Park BID, executive director), Mear One (artist), muralist Evan Skrederstu, and Tanner Blackman (Kindel Gagan Public Affairs Consulting) will discuss the current renaissance of public art, if a continuity of public art narrative possible or even desirable any longer and if gentrification made contemporary street artists “sell outs.”
Los Angeles’ is part of the Pacific Rim, an as such, Asian art is explored with three panels: Japanese Pop Art Now on Thursday at 3pm; Chinese, a discussion of of historic and contemporary ink and wash; and “The History of Dansaekhawa,” Korea’s contemporary monochrome paintings in conjunction with the LA Art Show exhibition “Dansaekhwa II: The Traces of Four Artists.”
Other panels include The Life and Work of Ricardo Manelli, one of Europe’s Top Artists and Illustrators; and Travelers in Time: The Fragility of the Historical Memory and Political Powers, a discussion with acclaimed Spanish artist Lluis Barba, both in conjunction with LA Art Show exhibitions; and Art and the LA River, in conjunction with the current “Victor Hugo Zayas: The River Paintings” exhibition on view at Museum of Latin American Art.
Tickets for the LA Art Show range in price from $15 for one day admission to $250 for the Wednesday VIP and preview party, benefiting St. Jude’s Hospital.
