Save the Date: “Layers” with Essi Zimm, Toshee, Nicholas Bonamy and Joey Feldman at The Gabba Gallery – March 12th

We are really looking forward to the opening of “LAYERS”, four simultaneous solo exhibitions at The Gabba Gallery, featuring the work of artists Essi Zimm, Tōshee, Nicholas Bonamy, and Joey Feldman, curated by Jason Ostro.

Opening reception is on Saturday March 12th from 7pm-11pm. There will be music by DJ Jonathan Williams, and the Richeeze Gourmet Grilled Cheese Food Truck and Perrier will be available. Facebook invite here.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Essi Zimm’s artwork delves into fairy tales and indigenous legends with mixed media layers of paper, pencil, ink, paint and more. The characters and meanings of these colorful stories are evoked through guttural marks as the viewer explores Zimm’s visual translations.

Influenced by his graphic design background, Tōshee employs bold, vibrant elements to arrest the viewer’s gaze. His technique incorporates both additive and subtractive processes with paint, pencil, ink, epoxy, and stencils that come together to produce images reminiscent of Eastern art.

The work of Nicholas Bonamy reflects the many layers of contemporary life happening all at once. Actions, thoughts, and dreams are revealed differently from every distance as the viewer’s focus drifts from one perspective to another in an experience akin to daydreaming while driving.

Cartwheel Art’s Note: Nicholas is a DTLA Arts District Artist who graciously opens his studio to Cartwheel Art Tours often. This was the last tour. He’s exhibited work with Cartwheel Art in the Arts District recently at Fabrik Expo. Also, last year in the Angel City Brewery Heritage Festival Art Show that featured artists in the DTLA Arts District. His work is always a crowd favorite. We love his use of color and layers along with how he incorporates Arts District buildings and landmarks, like the sixth-street bridge, into his landscapes, that have now become pieces documenting history of the area due to changes in the neighborhood.

Fun is what you feel when viewing the characters exposed in the exuberant artworks of Joey Feldman. His colorful use of mixed media and gestural marks, lines, and layers ultimately add up to an energetic portrait of the eccentricities revealed in a character.

The Gabba Gallery is located at 3126 Beverly Blvd. Street parking or $8 at the church at 3001 Beverly Blvd. All parking proceeds benefit Iglesia Principe De Paz.

LAYERS will be on view from March 12 to April 2.
