Hauser Wirth & Schimmel (HWSLA), will be inaugurating its new Los Angeles complex located in the Downtown Los Angeles arts District, with ‘Revolution in the Making,’ a cross-generational exhibition that will bring together significant works by women artists who have transformed the language of abstract sculpture.

The grand opening is Sunday March 13th from 2pm-6pm.

Based in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District, Cartwheel Art, has been extremely excited to welcome Hauser, Wirth and Schimmel to the neighborhood. When their doors open to the public this Sunday, experiencing the incredible job their team has done in restoring and enhancing he former Globe Mills flour manufacturing complex, into the most unique and largest art complex on the west coast, to view art, will leave you wanting to come back for more! It will be a new space to take in art and relax in the open space courtyard, where the restaurant Manuela, will open this summer.

Cartwheel Art founder and Cartwheel Art Tours director, Cindy Schwarzstein, and Steve Grody, historian, photographer, contributor to Cartwheel Art Magazine, author of Graffiti LA, and who assisted HWSLA, in identifying the murals, who lead neighborhood tours together, had a sneak peek last month.

They were thrilled to see how the interior of the new art complex, had been methodically transformed from the old industrial manufacturing buildings, some dating back to the 1890’s. For example, the walls that had peeling paint are still there, as is the old elevator and electrical boxes. HWSLA, have also methodically restored the molding, stairs and other architectural unique details in the old bank building.  We’ve been careful to not post much until the official press preview today. Stay tuned for more from Cartwheel Art after today’s preview.

As for the exterior, that housed graffiti art with tagging and productions, viewed by groups with Cartwheel Art Tours, as they learned about graffiti lettering and Styles, most of the walls on the 2-and-a-half acre city block, that were painted by crews such as CBS, LOD, OFA, and UTI Crews with artists well-known through the graffiti community including: Dcypher, Dytch 66, Haste, Hex TGO, Natone, Piek, Sram, Tahnks One, Tyer, Vyal One, Mister Cartoon, among others, have been whitewashed.

The exception, is in a public walkway that traverses along the entire length of the building. It is there where HWSLA, has preserved the work, that can still be seen in the public walkway by graffiti crew OFA (Out for Action) and  Inner City Rebels (ICR) with artists: Else Oner and Spiro, along with a wheatpaste by Jeanette Parades, and local female contemporary artist Kim West, who was commissioned by HWSLA to restore her murals. Most of these murals will soon be overlooking an edible garden that will supply an on-site restaurant opening in the summer at HWSLA. There is also a new mural that HWSLA has commissioned on the interior by Mary Heilmann.

Stay tuned for more details, that will include a historical look back at the graffiti art over the years, housed on the walls of the new HWSLA, from Steve Grody. Here’s more about the opening exhibition. From materials provided by  Hauser, Wirth & Schimmel:

“Through the nearly 100 works made by 34 artists over the past seventy years, this ambitious undertaking traces ways in which women have changed the course of art by deftly transforming the language of sculpture since the postwar period.”

The works on view spanning from 1947-2016, will  reveal their makers inventing radically new forms and processes that privilege solo studio practice, tactility, and the idiosyncrasies of the artist’s own hand.

Hauser, With & Schimmel continue

” ‘Revolution in the Making’ will explore multiple strains of artistic approaches, characterized by abstraction and repetition, that reject the precedent of a monolithic masterwork on a pedestal, employing such tactics as stacking, hanging, and intertwining, to create an intimate reciprocity between artist and viewer. The exhibition will examine how elements that are central to art today – including engagement with found, experimental, and recycled materials, as well as an embrace of contingency, imperfection, and unstructured play – were propelled by the work of women who, in seeking new means to express their own voices, dramatically expanded the definition of sculpture.”

On view through 4 September 2016, ‘Revolution in the Making’ is co-curated by Paul Schimmel, former chief curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and Partner and Vice President atHauser & Wirth;and Jenni Sorkin, art historian, critic, and Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art History at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

‘Revolution in the Making’ includes many works on loan from nearly 60 major American museums, artists’ estates, and private collections, as well as new sculptures commissioned for the exhibition. The show is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published in collaboration with Skira. This book includes original contributions by Jenni Sorkin, as well as Elizabeth A.T. Smith, Executive Director of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, and former Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Anne M. Wagner, art historian, critic, and Class of 1936 Professor emerita, University of California, Berkeley. Tracing a Revolution Feminism changed the course of 20th century art by altering the very notion of what art could be.

The exhibition runs from March 13th – September 4th, 2016 at  Hauser Wirth & Schimmel located in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District: 901 East 3rd Street, Los Angeles CA 90013
