Save the Date: “Out Of Line” at Subliminal Projects – Opening Reception April 9th

Posted by

unspecified-1Out Of Line featuring four distinct artists exploring contemporary drawing and mark-making techniques will be opening at Subliminal Projects on Saturday April 9th from 8pm-11pm.

Using primarily graphite, pen, and ink, the artists selected for this show examine and expand upon traditional concepts of drawing. Each artist takes their own illustrative liberty to magnify the medium and their relationship to gesture, concept, and point of view. Out Of Line celebrates the most fundamental art-making process that has served as a means of public expression throughout human history.

In mathematics, a line is defined as the length between two points; in art, a line can start and stop anywhere. With every line, mark, and gradation, the artist connects his or her own personal narrative onto the drawing surface. Out Of Line celebrates this drawing process as one of the most efficient means of communicating ideas. The marks made while composing a drawing hold their own language, technique, and form. With every nuance and stylistic articulation, these artists draw what they see and showcase their ability to represent their unique vision of the world.

The works exhibited allow viewers to experience every step of the drawing process. Unlike other disciplines, true draftsmen do not have the luxury to paint over or reconstruct their compositions. Out Of Line showcases beautiful and technically accomplished drawings that challenge the viewer to delve deeper and place themselves into these artists’ inventive worlds. Even with limited means, the art exhibited in this show illustrate how our imagination can lead to endless creative possibilities.

About the Artwork:

With a background in graffiti and mural painting, artist Aaron Li-Hill is no stranger to the ongoing conversation surrounding what is considered high and lowbrow art. As a participant in many imposing disciplines of art, Li-Hill employs painting, illustration, stenciling, and sculptural elements in his art practice. His works range from smaller multiples to massive murals that explore mechanization, scientific development, and man versus nature. His work attempts to decipher the complexities of the rapid development in our contemporary age.

Using simply a pen and paper, Guno Park draws inspiration from the world around him. Through observation and investigation, Park reacts to the world he lives in and the everyday activities he participates in. Park’s art shows how one simple tool can be fundamental in form but complex in execution.

Mark Powell recycles old, used, and tattered envelopes and maps as canvases to produce hyper-realistic drawings. His sketches are made using only a Biro pen, and they often include original stamps, postage marks, and addresses. By preserving envelopes and appropriating their original purpose, this artist preserves a bit of antiquity and the tales behind the sender.

Von, described as “one of London’s most remarkable contemporary artists,” is influenced by the likeness and dichotomy between nature and popular culture. His work is as detailed as it is abstract, walking the graceful line between surrealism and documentary portraiture
