WOW!! This was such an incredible tour day for Cartwheel Art Tours x Atlas Obscura, with Juice Magazine, Jules Muck and Bisco Smith!! We even had a surprise visit from Jeff Ho who painted a surfboard for our group at Juice Magazine Headquarters! Also Josh spoke to the group about adaptive skateboarding.

Original event listing:
Step back in time to the 1970s, when motorcycle clubs ruled the boardwalk, local surfers dodged the ruins of a sunken amusement park, and the Z-Boys revolutionized skateboarding in empty swimming pools.

On August 14th, we’ll explore the past and present of this beach community with Cartwheel Art Tours founder, Cindy Schwarzstein and Juice Magazine’s Dan Levy, along with local icons of Venice skate, surf, and street art culture.

Highlights of this tour included:

Juice Magazine: Exclusive access inside Juice Magazine’s Headquarters (closed to the public!) to view photos of the early Dogtown era featuring Jeff Ho, Craig Stecyk, and other legends of surf and skate culture. Juice Magazine is a publisher dedicated to skateboarding, surfing, and punk rock located next to the former P.O.P. pier, one of the best local breaks of the 1970s.

Venice Walls and Skatepark: Discover the history and importance of the Venice Walls and Skatepark as a hub for skaters and graffiti writers. Dan Levy will discuss Juice Magazine’s role in the movie “Made in Venice.”

Murals: Roam the alleys with street artist Jules Muck, who’s painted more than twenty murals in Venice. We’ll also see murals by Chase, Speedy Graphito, Bisco Smith, Ralph Ziman aka Afrika 47, Wyatt Mills, Never 1959, and many others. Along the way, Dan Levy will point out some obscure points of interest, such as the locations of Jay Adams old pad and Eric Clapton’s house.

C.A.V.E. Gallery: Our adventure will end at C.A.V.E. Gallery where we’ll meet local artist, Bisco Smith, who will talk about his exhibition “Process” and what it’s like living/working in Venice.

Save the Date: Next tour in Venice Beach will be in November. Stay tuned for more details.

More photos by Cindy Schwarzstein can be found here. Also a video of Bisco Smith discussing his exhibition work for “Process” during the artist talk at C.A.V.E. Gallery, by Cindy can be found here. Another video of Jeff Ho painting a surfboard for the movie Made in Venice can be found here.
