Save the Date & Preview: LA Art Show – January 11th – 15th
Already considered one of the largest international art fairs in the United States, with 70,000 attendees last year, the LA Art Show is significantly expanding its footprint for its 22nd edition opening January 11-15, 2017.

The 2017 fair will feature the most international list of exhibitors to date, with more than 100 galleries from over 20 countries including China, Czechoslovakia, France, Japan, Mexico and the United Kingdom; an expanded group of corporate and media partners, including Stella Artois and the China Cultural Media Group, among many others; and an exciting roster of new exhibitions and programs curated by major local and international museums and arts organizations.

Kim Abeles: Legends for a Reanimated Woman
Presented by the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk
Kim Abeles has a history of creating biographical artworks of strong females, including Calamity Jane, Rosa Parks, St. Bernadette, Eva Peron, Carmen Miranda, Beryl Markham, and more recently, Pope Joan. In her latest body of work, “Legends for a Reanimated Woman”, Abeles presents new works about Jeanne D’Arc (aka Joan of Arc), and selections of her earlier work.
Retna/Nunca: Indigenous Reflections
Presented by Art All Ways Projects
Retna/Nunca: LA/LA offers a thriving exploration of the artistic connections between Retna and Nunca, which means “Never” in Portuguese. They represent the influential Los Angeles and Latin America (Brazil) urban graffiti art scene.
This compelling mural painting will be their first collaboration in the US. It conveys their appreciation for the Heritage of Mural painting emphasizing the indigenous reflections in each others work.
Dosshaus 2017 – The Artist’s Room

Sculptures made of Cardboard and Acrylic Paint
Collaborative duo Dosshaus present “The Artist’s Room”, a life-sized fantasy live/work space. A combination of installation and performance, the artists inhabit a sculptural environment where everything, including their clothing, is created from recycled cardboard. Dosshaus engage cultural questions with whimsy and insouciance.
Luis Millé
Presented by Alex Slato Kabinet and the Business of Art
Millé defines his work as a phenomenology of space based on the conception of threedimensionality as a dynamic condition through inflection, expansion and tension, where space does not merely contain the work: space is the artwork.

Melanie Pullen | Violent Times

The performance Violent Times, by artist Melanie Pullen, is an abstract interpretation that explores both the ceremonial and crude facets of violence, inherent in both nature and the human condition. Pullen, to create a tempo for the extreme nature of the piece, will create a theatrical setting, using the sounds of base bodily functions, including a human heartbeat, and breathing, made in real-time. As the physical sound evolves the performers also fluctuate between the concept of inflicted human torture to barbaric untamed aggression.

Part of Fragments From Home, a preview of Home So Different, So Appealing
Opening on June 7, 2017 as part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA
The Cut-Outs installation piece, an 8 x 73 foot acrylic on cardboard mural, deals with scenes from Gomez’s West Hollywood neighborhood. Gardeners and pool cleaners tend to the outside, then the mural proceeds inside, depicting housekeepers cleaning the living room, dining room, the bathroom and finally, the bedroom. Playing with negative space and with perspective, Gomez has life-sized cardboard figures emerge from the body of the mural, standing alone in the space, confronting the viewer. The piece functions as a still-life of affluent Los Angeles.
Scherezade Garcia | In My Floating World
Presented by MOLAA
“In my Floating World, Landscape of Paradise”, a soft sculpture, Garcia collected inner tubes in different sizes and in a variety of shades of blue. She also bandaged the surface of some of the inner tubes with photographic images of the sea on which she has drawn a variety of symbols from her visual repertoire that refer to the memory of the sea. She composed a floating landscape with these inner tubes, creating a randomly organic form connected by electrical ties, sometimes tied very tightly, a suggestion of the struggles hidden within the deep blue beauty. Also each of the inner tubes carries an airport baggage tag that identifies the intended destination of the waves, which is New York, alluding to the contemporary promised land of the free.

In recognition of Los Angeles’s new position as an international hub for cutting-edge contemporary art across all mediums — from painting, sculpture and drawing to performance, video, and installation — the fair’s board of directors is placing a new focus on post-war modern and contemporary artwork. This year the LA Art Show will also launch ROOTS, an exclusive curated section of historical dealers from the old Los Angeles Fine Art Show, presenting exhibitions of 18th Century European, Contemporary Realism, California Plein Air and Hudson River School paintings.
“As Los Angeles takes its place at the vanguard of the global art scene, our ability to adapt and evolve to meet the art market’s current trends and provide strong civic support is vital,”
says LA Art Show producer and partner Kim Martindale.
“The evolving role of the art fair as a fulcrum for art commerce, connecting galleries, artists, curators and international and multi-generational collectors drives our program.”
Opening Party:
For the third year in a row St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® will be the beneficiary of LA Art Show’s Opening Night Preview and Premiere Party, which will kick off festivities on January 11, 2017 with a portion of ticket proceeds benefitting the hospital’s mission. Last year’s Opening Night Preview was attended by more than 7,000 VIPs and was hosted by Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman.
