Save the Date: “Blurred Lines” a Photography Exhibition, by Brent Broza, at Square Rhino Projects – Thursday July 27th

The Los Angeles Art District keeps getting artsier, as another gallery flourishes in the heart of this booming formerly industrial area. Announcing a new name and a new exhibit, Sarkis Vartanian, the Owner/ Chef of the popular neighborhood restaurant The Daily Dose, presents his second show in his adjacent gallery dedicated to local and So Cal artists. The gallery space, now called Square Rhino Projects, will present the solo exhibit, “Blurred Lines,” featuring photographer Brent Broza, opening on Thursday July 27th, with an artist reception from 7-10 pm.

Vartanian, who opened the café in 2012, says food and hospitality are in his blood. Doing something he loves everyday is inspiring, and now he gets to help others who are equally inspired in their art practice. Vartanian and Broza were high school friends, attending Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. Broza found his former classmate on Facebook, and walked in one day – reuniting old friends, and discovering the charm of this hidden gem of a restaurant. Naturally, talk of art ensued, and a solo exhibit was set to celebrate the renaming of the gallery.

As an artist heavily influenced by his earliest surroundings, most of Broza’s photos involve landscapes, surf culture, musicians, and other artists. His subjects are often some of his close friends, lending a more intimate perspective to his work. But this exhibit, featuring new work from the Fireline and Serenity series, is inspired by one of his greatest passions – surfing. His strong affinity for the ocean has made it one of his favorite subjects, and for that, we are grateful.

This exhibit is a pure celebration of color and light, appearing at first glance to be paintings on canvas. But these color-field abstracts are actually horizon photos of sunsets or sunrises, striations of color that are painterly in feeling, softly blurred to invoke the sense of tranquility one often feels when standing on the shore of ones favorite beach. Living near the ocean for much of his life, from Manhattan Beach to Hermosa, to a few years in Maui, it is no wonder that Broza has been able to capture that spirit in his work.
