SAVE THE DATE & PREVIEW: “Arts District Residents & Lovers” Exhibit Opens at Angel City Brewery May 3rd

As the Arts District changes and the gentrification forces more and more of the long-term residents to relocate, we are thrilled that several venues showcase the work of the locals. This month, Angel City Brewery is the location for just such a stand, as their gallery area managed by Art Share LA opens an exhibit on Thursday, May 3rdentitled “Arts District Residents and Lovers.”  Curated by Dale Youngman, the show is composed of work in all mediums by either current or recent residents, or those, like many who are enamored of this quirky and special creative community, have tried to capture the spirit of the neighborhood in their artwork.

The Arts District region is generally considered to be the area bordered by Alameda, First Street, Violet Street, and the LA River.  But to many residents, the District’s heart is Bloom Square, Art Share, and the American Hotel. This exhibit features visions of that, but so much more.

“As I was standing at Art Share one day, I realized how much the neighborhood and that gallery mean to me. Although I have never lived in the Arts District, I spend more time there than anywhere except my own home since I closed my old gallery on Main Street a few years ago.  The vibrancy of the community, the creativity of so many artist friends of mine that live there – it’s like an energy shot of espresso every time I’m there. The theme of this show allows me to include both literal images of the neighborhood I love, and also the work of many AD artists I have known and followed for years.”
~Dale Youngman

The large group exhibit consists of paintings and photographic images of the neighborhood created by “Lovers”, as well as a wide variety of mixed media and sculptural work from the actual AD inhabitants. All artwork is for sale through Art Share LA. Here’s a preview to wet your whistle before you get your craft beer on May 3rd.

Lilly Lakich, one of the co-founders of the original Museum of Neon Art, creates her world-class neon art sculptures in her studio in the center of Bloom Square, the same location as that original museum.

Sculptor David Hollen transforms common materials into very unusual contemporary sculpture. His work is whimsical in feeling, yet industrial by nature, using such materials as rubber, steel cable, hemp, and molded plastic.

Resident Anyes Galliani creates mixed media collage work from her studio and gallery on Third Street across from Hauser and Wirth.

Tom Garner has lived in the Toy Factory for 10 years and enjoyed views of the 6th Street Bridge from his loft. The old bridge inspired a series of his paintings, which then inspired a large group exhibit curated by Youngman and held at Art Share three years ago just before it was demolished.

Melissa Richardson Banks lived in the Arts District for nearly 20 years, until her building was sold, forcing the residents to relocate. Her website “The Downtown Muse,” her very popular social media platforms, and a successful book all convey her love for photographing the changing aspects of the AD.

Other participating artists include Colette Miller, Emmeric Konrad, Jaime Colindrez, Jason Pippen, Johnny White, Patrick Hammerlein, Ricardo Garcia, Rick Mendoza, Suzi Moon, and Svetlana Penrose.

Please join the celebration at the opening event and throughout the month of May.
