SAVE THE DATE: Art at The Rendon // Hidden Rooms – A Community Art Event at the Rendon Hotel in the DTLA Arts District – June 1st through June 3rd

Posted by

If you’ve ever been stuck at the light at the corner of 7th Street and Santa Fe Avenue in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District, you may – or may not – have noticed the faded brick building on the corner, across from the recently renovated historic Ford Motors building, soon to become the home of Warner Music Group. But after this event, you will never look at that old 1920’s building the same way again. Because on June 1st, more than 60+ local artists will unveil their site-specific art installations in every room in the building, activating the entire building into a vibrant art showcase of painting, sculpture, installations, video projections, live music, and so much more!

“Hidden Rooms” is the first in the ART AT THE RENDON series, an on-going multi-disciplinary program bringing art, musical performances, lectures, artist residencies and film screenings to the local community at the former Rendon Hotel. This first activation will begin the transformation of the entire building into a shining example of what gentrification is supposed to be – an improvement of the area that benefits all the residents, not just the wealthy few.

For three days only, June 1-3, the building will be a beacon of creativity. Curated by Cartwheel Art Founder Cindy Schwarzstein, all participating artists and musicians were selected for their cultural contribution to the city, and connection to the Arts District, which has quickly become one of the hotbeds of contemporary art in this country. As Cindy explains,

“HIDDEN ROOMS is a celebration of the artistic community that helped to give the Arts District its namesake and the community that continues this legacy. Artists will have this building for an entire week leading up to its public opening on June 3rd to create, collaborate and connect with each other. They will convert the entire building into a living, breathing work of art, as an opportunity to connect not only with each other, but to the entire neighborhood.”

From established artists like Retna who has had a studio in the Arts District for years, and whose still-visible mural on The Rendon which was painted fifteen years ago, to emerging artist Nicholas Bonamy who has a live/work studio next door, all participants have impacted the landscape of art in Los Angeles. Each artist has been offered a room in which to create their own artistic vision, creating unique experiences around every corner.
