These Days Gallery is partnering with UNITED AMERICAN INDIAN INVOLVEMENT, an organization founded in 1974 to aid local disadvantaged Native Americans in their presentation of “The People’s HomeWinston Street 1974.”  UAII opened in the same building that the gallery maintains today, at 118 Winston Street in DTLA, making this exhibit an especially meaningful one. The exhibit will consist of photography including original Polaroids and snapshots that have never been shown prior to this event. The show chronicles the lives and critical events of UAII’s earliest beginnings, covering decades of struggle by this often-neglected minority community.

“This historic and noteworthy photo exhibition, presented in the exact same location where the photographs were taken over 40 years ago, shares a story of hope, community and the resilience of America’s first and often forgotten people.”
~Stephen Zeigler, Co-Founder of These Days

UAII was established as a nonprofit 501(c)3 by Marian Zucco and Baba Cooper to provide shelter, food, and a community gathering place for American Indians living on the streets of Downtown’s Skid Row. Through the U.S. government program of relocation during 1956-1979, a large number of American Indians were encouraged to leave their homes on reservations throughout the country to move to urban areas, including Los Angeles, suggesting better opportunities for jobs and education. Unfortunately, this was not the case for most of those who relocated. Thankfully, UAII was there to help and continues to provide services to American Indian and Alaskan Native families and youth living in Los Angeles County. Currently, they provide services to members from over 200 different tribes.
