Moiré Mandala by Mark Walsh in Pershing Square

Pershing Square will celebrate its newest sculpture, Moiré Mandala by Mark Walsh, at a special event on Thursday, July 12, from 6 to 9 pm. The evening will include a Q&A with the artist, as well as live music from singer/songwriter Raspin Stuwart and other musicians. Louise Capone, Senior Recreation Director and Facility Manager for Pershing Square will speak, and Mark Walsh will talk about his inspiration and vision, the design and installation process, and what creating the sculpture has meant to him.

“I was given the creative freedom to work organically, as I would on a sculpture, rather than a formal design project. I started creating the basic structure early on in the design process. I resolved details, and worked out technical solutions as I went along. I could not improvise as much as I do when I work on a smaller scale, but was able to retain the aspects of formal exploration and improvisation with materials that define my sculptural process. The result was something that I could never have come up with on the drawing board.” – Mark Walsh, artist

Walsh, a longtime member of the DTLA arts community, has been involved with Pershing Square for many years. He is one of the founders of the Pershing Square Art Squared Gallery program, which curates and installs large vinyl prints of original paintings by local artists on a rotating basis on the large South wall. He is also involved with other city projects, and is a board member of multiple cultural organizations including Art Share L.A., the Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre, the Dale and Edna Walsh Foundation, and the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona.

The Moiré Mandala is a diamond-shaped structure comprised of a black painted steel frame supporting a canopy of overlapping perforated aluminum plates that form the moiré pattern. By day, the shadows created are mesmerizing; by night, the effect is even more dramatic due to the gradually-changing multi-color interior lighting. Stepping up onto the wooden deck, admirers are treated to ambient sound created by musician friends of the artist. Visit Walsh’s website for more about the Moiré Mandala and how it was created.
