Saber - End Epilepsy

Artist and activist Saber, a.k.a. Ryan Weston Shook, has created several street art pieces in the DTLA Arts District where Cartwheel Art is based. He was featured in the recent Beyond the Streets show, and his next event is free to the public. On Thursday evening, Saber will be painting live in Pershing Square at the West Coast kickoff for the Epilepsy Foundation’s new action and awareness campaign, Let’s Use Our Brains to End Epilepsy. Saber has epilepsy and is one of the foundation’s End Epilepsy ambassadors. The event also has special meaning for Cartwheel Art—founder Cindy Schwarzstein has a 19-year-old son with epilepsy.

The End Epilepsy event starts with an educational exhibit about the brain and seizures at 6 p.m., followed by Saber’s live art performance from 6 to 8 p.m. He will create a massive art installation to raise awareness of epilepsy and efforts to end it. Saber’s art piece will later be auctioned off, and T-shirts featuring his art will be sold on Omaze—both will benefit the Epilepsy Foundation. Actor Greg Grunberg (who has appeared in Alias, Heroes, Felicity, and more) will be at the event to share his family’s epilepsy story.

Let’s Use Our Brains to End Epilepsy asks people to get involved on an intellectual level and change the conversations around epilepsy and brain health. Visit the End Epilepsy website to learn seizure first aid and find other ways to get involved.
