Mark Dean Veca at Jason Vass Gallery

Los Angeles artist Mark Dean Veca has a new solo show opening this week at Jason Vass Gallery in the DTLA Arts District, featuring works from 2010-2019. Veca’s art follows in the pop art tradition, but includes a surreal, psychedelic aspect that he describes as a “biomorphic abstraction.” He told Cartwheel, “The last time I had a solo show was at Western Project at the end of 2014, so it’s been a little over four years.”

In the past few years, he has been focused on installations, including recent site-specific work at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. In April 2018, the Crocker named him the second recipient of the John S. Knudsen Endowment Fund’s $25,000 prize. In June 2018, he was one of the participating artists in Art at the Rendon’s Hidden Rooms installation, which transformed the entire Rendon Hotel into an immersive experience.

Here in Los Angeles, Veca’s artwork will be featured on the Metro Purple Line Subway extension, which is currently under construction. He says, “I’ve done a lot of large-scale installation work over the years, and I have one other permanent public art commission in New York. I was asked at the end of 2017 to come up with a proposal for the Wilshire and La Brea station. I was super excited, because before I moved to New York, that area around La Brea was where I lived and worked in the ‘80s—way back then. I was really psyched to be able to possibly have some permanent work in that station. I submitted a proposal, and it worked out. That’s what I’m in the process of working on now, and that station will be open in four or five years.”

In the meantime, Veca is looking forward to his show at Jason Vass Gallery, which includes a custom-painted piece on the gallery wall, and says, “It’s great to see that work from over the past ten years or so all together. It’s exciting to see that. I moved back to L.A. in 2008, and this work is all stuff I’ve done since I’ve been back here.”
