SAVE THE DATE: “Build Bridges, Paint Walls” Opens at The Rendon Gallery – Friday, May 3, 2019

Cartwheel Art is thrilled to be the event producers (and a community partner) for the upcoming “Build Bridges, Paint Walls” exhibition at The Rendon Gallery in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District, May 3-5, 2019. Build Bridges, Paint Walls is a cross-cultural collaboration that will feature pieces from Colombian street artists DJLU/JuegaSiempre, El Care Barbie, Erre, and Toxicómano, alongside work from the Los Angeles-based Las Fotos Project, a nonprofit organization that inspires teenage girls through photography, mentorship, and self-expression.

DJLU, Erre, and Toxicómano were all involved in the “Borderless: Latin America” show at Gabba Gallery in April 2018. At the time, they talked to Cartwheel about their work and how street art is received in Colombia.

Build Bridges, Paint Walls is presented by The Rendon Gallery in partnership with the UCLA Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Ralph Ziman, cofounder of The Rendon Gallery, first met the Colombian artists several years ago through a friend. He says, “I love their style, their energy, and the way they bring the political to the street.”

The public is invited to the Build Bridges, Paint Walls opening reception on Friday, May 3 (RSVP here), which will include a performance by California punk band Deseos Primitivos and a DJ set by Skwirl Sauce. The corner dive bar, Licha’s Bar and Grill, will be serving beer from Angel City Brewery and Topo Chico mineral water. Sus Arepas and Memije’s Tacos & Catering will have food for sale on site. While the opening reception is free to attend, donations are welcome. 100% of donations will benefit Las Fotos Project.
