The Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, organizes a benefit event called INCOGNITO every two years, and it’s happening online in 2020!  ICA LA, an innovative art museum, is our neighbor here in the DTLA Arts District, and Cartwheel loves supporting their programming.

What sets INCOGNITO apart as a fundraiser is that the artist behind each piece remains anonymous until after the piece is purchased. You can view the full list of participating artists at theicala.org/incognito, but can you guess who created each artwork? Each piece is a 12”x12” original work by a contemporary artist will be sold for $500. This year, the event will be hosted by actor, comedian, and producer Joel McHale on the Handbid virtual platform. All proceeds directly support ICA LA’s free exhibitions, education programs, and community outreach.

If you’d like to see the work in person before the online sale, be sure your tickets include PRECOGNITO access. From October 15-17, an exclusive, timed preview of the artwork will be held at The Rendon, a former hotel and bar located in a historic building located just a few blocks from ICA LA. PRECOGNITO ticket holders will be able to view the INCOGNITO artwork on display while adhering to social distancing guidelines. Refreshments will be served for “Devotee” level ticket buyers in The Rendon’s classic bar.

Cindy Schwarzstein, Cartwheel Art’s founder, also works as the Director of Programming, Projects, and Community Partnerships for Art At The Rendon. Cindy is on the host committee for INCOGNITO and is really looking forward to this year’s event. She says, “It’s a fantastic opportunity to buy art that you like at an affordable price. Since you don’t know who you’re buying—though you might suspect if you know certain artists’ styles—it’s very exciting. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or it’s your first time at INCOGNITO, this event is your chance to learn about new artists and be able to buy their work.”
