Save the Date, March 21: Richard Shelton Launches Temporary Space

Opening March 21, Temporary Space manifests artist Richard Shelton’s vision for a 21st century model of an art gallery.  Shelton’s exhibition,  “Richard Shelton–50 Years of Painting”, curated by Fatemeh Burnes, is the first the exhibition for Temporary Space which merges a traditional brick and mortar gallery with e-commerce. Temporary Space, at its 5522 Wilshire Blvd location, will be open through November, 2015, and will showcase two exhibitions of Shelton’s work, before moving to a Downtown Los Angeles location in 2016. Future exhibitions are planned in other cities.

The opening reception is March 21, from 6 to 10 pm. There are catalog essays by Shana Nys Dambrot, Peter Frank and John Seed for this first exhibition of Richard Shelton’s work.

As Shelton explains, Temporary Space has stories roots:

Artists have been mounting their own exhibitions for centuries, the two most famous modern examples being Gustave Courbet’s exhibition in 1855 and Edouard Manet’s exhibition of 1867.

While “Richard Shelton–50 Years of Painting” is Temporary Space’s launch exhibition, Shelton says there be will exhibits showcasing the art of mid-career and late-career artists, with particular emphasis upon artists who have been under-appreciated, both critically and economically, by the art establishment.

By having longer term pop-up locations, Temporary Space can bring exhibitions to different neighborhoods and cities. The team behind Temporary Space has created a digitally interactive viewer friendly environment to allow viewers to broaden their understanding of the artist’s work, while complimenting  the physical exhibition with an online digital exhibition to reach a broader audience. They also create a digital archive for each artist they will exhibit. This allows Temporary Space to exhibit and sell the artists entire body of available work, while eliminating the salesman so the artist can deal directly with the collector and retain 75% of the profits from the sale of their art.

Temporary Space has series of events planned through out their run, including music and poetry. They have partnered with PlanetRock Coffee & Tea. PlanetRock will serve local Los Angeles August Uncommon Tea and Ventura-based Beacon Coffee for a suggested donation. All proceeds will benefit the PlanetRock Foundation’s first annual Academic All-Star Celebration.
