Cartwheel Art Tours x Atlas Obscura: “Shrine’s Haunted Shacks Gardens After Dark” – Pasadena

December 16, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

$30.00

Self-taught painter, installation, and performance artist Brent Allen Spears (a.k.a. Shrine) has spent the past 20-plus years transforming his Pasadena home into a vivid sanctuary of altars, totems, and sculptures.

Join Cindy Schwarzstein, founder of Cartwheel Art Tours, for an exclusive “after dark” tour of this architectural wonder known as Haunted Shack Gardens. Guided by Shrine, we’ll get a peek into his creative process as we meander through the dreamlike world he has created from discarded objects such as bottles, rusty cans, broken ceramics, and sea shells.

And during this exclusive nighttime visit, you can be one of the first to experience Shrine’s latest addition to this ever-evolving environment: a custom lighting scheme, just in time for the peak of the “holiday lights” season.

ABOUT SHRINE
Shrine is a multi-faceted artist who has been making work across disciplines for over 30 years. The richness of his practice comes from lovingly embracing the unknown, working with items discarded by humans all over the world, and the complete dedication to his immersive process. Shrine’s work can be seen in countless countries on nearly all 7 continents. While tending to create larger-than-life installations in public spaces, these works are often made up of smaller sculptures, paintings, and found objects that come together, transforming themselves into something even greater than the sum of their parts. While he thrives on working outdoors and creating work that is both transitory and long-lasting, Shrine is no stranger to the gallery world—he has shown at many galleries. His work has been featured at solo project spaces including Art Basel Miami, Craft and Folk Art Museum, and La Luz De Jesus Gallery, as well as Yerba Buena Art Center. His installations have been included in top art and music festivals such as Coachella Art and Music Festival, Lightning in a Bottle, BOOM Festival, and Symbiosis. Shrine was selected to build The Temple at the incomparable experience of Burning Man.
