Cartwheel Art Tours x Atlas Obscura: Venice Beach

August 27, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

$35

Step back in time to the 1970s, when motorcycle clubs ruled the boardwalk, local surfers dodged the ruins of a sunken amusement park, and the Z-Boys revolutionized skateboarding in empty swimming pools. On August 27, we’ll explore the surprising past of this beach community with Cartwheel Art Tours founder, Cindy Schwarzstein and Juice Magazine’s Dan Levy, along with local icons of Venice skate, surf, and street art culture.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS TOUR INCLUDE:
Juice Magazine: Exclusive access inside Juice Magazine’s Headquarters (closed to the public!) to view photos of the early Dogtown era featuring Jeff Ho, Craig Stecyk, and other legends of surf and skate culture. Juice Magazine is a publisher dedicated to skateboarding, surfing, and punk rock located next to the former P.O.P. pier, one of the best local breaks of the 1970s.

Venice Walls and Skatepark: Discover the history and importance of the Venice Walls and Skatepark as a hub for skaters and graffiti writers. Dan Levy will discuss Juice Magazine’s role in the movie about the Skatepark, “Made in Venice.”

Murals: Roam the alleys in search of street art, graffiti, and murals. See work by Chase, Speedy Graphito, Bisco Smith, Ralph Ziman aka Afrika 47, Wyatt Mills, Never 1959, and many others. Along the way, Dan Levy will point out some obscure points of interest, such as the locations of Jay Adams old pad and Eric Clapton’s house.
