Hero Complex Galley, or HCG, will host an opening reception for Jim Mahfood’s first solo show Visual Funk on Friday Nov. 15. This is the first of a two Mahfood-related events in two days, the second of which occurs at the Last Bookstore Nov. 16. Visual Funk will showcase an extensive viewing of his illustrations, with work including the last year of prolific Mahfood’s art: He created, with Joe Casey and Man of Action, DISCO Destroyer, a series for MTV’s Liquid Television and published multiple books of his work. Check out DISCO Destroyer which captures Mahfood kinetic style in a post-apocalyptic world.
Mahfood’s illustrations have a classically formed foundation that utilizes rhythm and free-form paint and ink to create a language and style entirely of his own. While Mahfood got his start in comic books, his career has branched off into the fields of illustration, advertising, murals, fine art, animation, live art in nightclubs, and custom body-painting.
The show will run until Nov. 23 with gallery hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
