Station to Station: The Train Comes to L.A.’s Union Station

September 26, 2013 @ 6:30 pm - 10:30 pm

Station to Station Train Rendering (C) Doug Aitken

This train traveling from New York to California will take three wonderful, well-paced weeks to comb artistic experimentation into the fabric of the United States. Many things are best done on a slow and steady course; behold, this spectacle on train tracks. “Station to Station” is a series of art installations and musical performances that will begin in New York and continue to Pennsylvania, Illinois, Minnesota, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

Arrival time at Los Angeles’ Union Station is slated for Sept. 26, 2013 at 6:30pm. The one-time only event (the concert part of which is sold out) features art installations, yurts, by Urs Fischer, Kenneth Anger, Liz Glynn, Carsten Höller, and Ernesto Neto, and performances by Beck, Dan Deacon, No Age, Sun Araw and the Congos. Beck has created and composed material exclusively for Station to Station.

Station to Station, which is a Doug Aitken project, states that its mission is to create unique opportunities for living artists to present significant new work.

The art installations will be installed outside Union Station, so if you can’t get ahold of a ticket for the musical performances, head to the station grounds anyway. It’s free to walk around, and you’ll be able to see the artists’ yurts, which, by the time they hit our L.A. stop, ought to have evolved interestingly. There will also be art gallery yurts-as-live-working-studio exhibitions (sponsored by Levi’s) and a food yurt.
