Art Basel 2013: Wynwood Walls Women
A landmark to well-known street artists and muralists, Wynwood Walls is part of an art complex built by the late Tony Goldman, a visionary known for transforming neglected neighborhoods into thriving cultural destinations. In years past, the Wynwood walls have touted murals by Retna, Ron English, Aiko, Kenny Sharf, and the Os Gemeos twins, among others. For 20143 co-curator Jeffery Deitch chose to create an all-female lineup of artists as a means to correct the “historical imbalance” of graffiti.
Hopefully next year and moving forward, the pendulum will swing towards artists based solely on talent and not on gender/gender expxression.
