Save the Date, March 8: Wyatt Mills “Phantasmagoria” at ESSNTL
“Phantasmagoria,” a solo show from Los Angeles-based American Expressive artist Wyatt Mills marks the launch of ESSNTL Gallery, the newest addition to Bergamot Station, opening March 8, 2014. Join in the celebration next Saturday from 6pm to 9pm, when you can delve into the visceral brush strokes and bold colors Mills combines with newspaper snippets, gossip magazines, and vintage propaganda to
recreate our past like a flickering memory of a dream.
Mills’ work, an irresistible concoction of punk rock and expressionism, has gotten a lot of attention as of late, with two murals–one in Culver City and one in Wynwood Miami, where he also exhibited with Art Miami–and a piece recently added to the collection of Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard. He’s a smart guy, with strong art skills and a point of view about the conflict of physical and digital reality creating a purgatory for our attention span.
Mills illustrates his social and psychological ideas with an ugly beauty. It’s a messy orchestration, a raw sophistication, an in-your-face delicacy. He says:
I want viewers to walk away with a loss of social reservation and an expansion of their inner dialogue. All paintings are better described as entities that propose unto viewers a private debate of which social boundaries they may find hideous, captivating, offensive, or attractive, leading to an invitation to explore why.
Newcomer ESSNTL Gallery celebrates artists who are fueled by their passion to communicate unique ideas, and who don’t feel compelled to compromise their artistic integrity to cater to popular tastes. They promise an opening night of mind blowing art, hedonism, and lots of wine.
CARTWHEEL will be bringing you a studio visit with Wyatt and lots more photos; in the meantime check out this recent video in which Wyatt shows and discusses his art:
