One Night Only! “22+1” – Viviana Druga’s Tarot Art, Oct. 1 at Actual Size Gallery
“22+1” — Viviana Druga and Tata Christiane’s tarot themed art show — is open to the public for one night only on Wednesday, October 1 in at Actual Size Gallery Chinatown. This show will feature incredible digital photo collages of Druga and Christiane’s newly designed cards projected within the gallery and a Druga-designed deck for visitors to experience. Druga, the show’s Berlin-based performance artist and photographer, will be in attendance to provide readings and meet those there to see her art.
More than a predictive tool to summon the unfathomable, the iconography within tarot cards is known to have inspired artists for centuries. With countless tarot editions rendered, each containing their own distinct colorful images, it’s easy to see the immediate results of this medium on the minds of those who create. In the case of Viviana Druga’s art, her inspiration lies in the Marseilles deck. In an interview with CartwheelArt.com, Druga says:
“I chose the Marseilles tarot deck for a couple reasons. It was the first registered tarot deck, and for that alone it is very meaningful to me. The Marseilles deck also translates well because the images are so easy to understand visually. I was inspired by [filmmaker, shamanistic scholar] Alejandro Jodorowsky. He created a re-edited the Tarot de Marseille deck. Shamanism is my main focus in my art.”
22+1 exhibition and performance will take place from 8:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. in Actual Size Gallery, located on New High Street between Ord and Alpine. More information on the art and to schedule a private viewing as well as details for contacting the gallery can be found here.
