“On the Wall” at Huntington Beach Art Center Photo Preview
The Huntington Beach Art Center–the exhibition location for Kustom Kulture in 2013, for which we were a media sponsor–presents a new exhibition titled “On the Wall.” The show consists of street art, featuring noted artists and many of those seen on the walls in Los Angeles by our Cartwheel Art Tours explorers in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. Artists included are: Nuke (Joseph Montalvo), Mice of Millions (Jamie Johnson), Codak, Sinan, Black Light King, Fearo153, Thanks One, Tewser, Plek, 2 Shae, Dytch, Vansaro, Trixter, Nuke, Shark Toof, Gozer, Armondo, Phil and others.
Kate Hoffman, executive director of the Huntington Beach Art Center, said a goal of the exhibit is to overcome the stigma associated with graffiti artists:
By bringing street art inside and putting it on the walls, we want to tell youth that street art is a valid art form, and vandalism doesn’t support that,” she said. “We want them to not tag, not be vandals with street art, but to recognize the legitimacy of it, bring it indoors and turn it into fine art. We want to attract young people and show them what the art center is all about.
Hoffman said the show is different from anything else the gallery has done, explaining that the Huntington Beach Art Center usually focuses on other types of fine art.
Spray paint, brushes, paint pens and other implements have been used to create the artist’s pieces on blank white walls. The exhibition’s programming is based around this being a colorful street art performance event which has consisted of live painting that began in the galleries and in the Art Center’s parking lot tomorrow, last Saturday July 18.
