Save the Date June 2 – June 5: Art Gathering, Queen Mary Long Beach
This is gonna be huge! Art Gathering brings over 400 artists together for a tattoo-influenced fine art fair weekend aboard the Queen Mary. Michael Keith of New Era Arts Group, Art Gathering’s parent company, explains:
We noticed that many kids out of art school would jump straight into tattooing, while many longtime tattooists also were doing fine art. The culture around tattoos, the people who are tattooed as well as the people doing the tattoos, are very into art, and while many people have covered their bodies with work, they still have some blank walls in their homes.
Using tattooing as its foundation, Art Gathering will have 280 tattooists from around the world in the exhibit hall aboard the Queen Mary, while the Grand Ballroom will boast an impressive roster of galleries and independent artists in a range of New Contemporary styles from Pop Surrealism and Low Brow to street, traditional and historical, plus the Kulture Klash wall where artists will be exhibiting by the square foot. Performance art, video and film–including the film Dark Progressivism which shows the influence of tattooing and graffiti on current art–will be featured at the Curiosity Corner.
Chet Zar will be presenting a specially ticketed four-hour session on how to paint a portrait of a monster and painter Michael Coy, who has created two Interactive Projects for Burning Man that received Honoraria Grants, will also be leading a workshop.
One Saturday June 4, Art Gathering will honor Ron English and Robert Hernandez for their contributions to art and tattooing, respectively. Risk will present the Make Your Mark award to English, and Carlos Torres, whose work is seen in this post, will present to Hernandez.
Shore side during Art Gathering, the Sea Walk and Queen Mary Park become the Artisan Village with makers featuring everything from vinyl toys to tees and ‘zines. The Sea walk and park will also be home to Range, featuring installations created by Burning Man Art.
The location on the gorgeous Art Deco Queen Mary offers attendees a unique art fair experience, one that is immersive, interactive and immediate. As Michael Keith says:
We are a new art fair for a new generation.
