Julie Faith: Julie Faith is an urban art photographer who focuses primarily on graffiti and street art, the very nature of which is fleeting and therefore must be documented. Her passion and joy are in capturing the unexpected, the spontaneous, the magical. She spends countless hours searching for art hidden in plain sight on the streets of LA and beyond. “There is simply nothing better,” Julie says, “than going into a situation unscripted, eyes wide open, camera in hand, and discovering something glorious.” Julie is captivated and inspired by the work of photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier, Martha Cooper, HollowDoubt, and the Lady Art Mafia.
Melinda Sanchez: It was in 2007, a trip to New York, that Melinda Sanchez knew she wanted to devote herself to art, specifically the culture of street art. Melinda felt it was important that she had a background in the business of art in order to grow as an artist herself. Working as a Gallery Assistant at Upper Playground in Downtown Los Angeles, she had the opportunity to learn from gallery staff, photographers, and prestigious street artists. As her knowledge of galleries and artists grew, her own talents as a photographer developed.
Melinda is driven by the idea that ease of access to social media and technology is a positive force in the democratization of street art. Melinda describes a common theme in her own work as finding “beauty in the breakdown.” She understands the universal hardship every individual faces, and feels that art is an integral mechanism in the process of healing.
Cindy Schwarzstein: Cindy’s exposure to art and adventure began at an early age in Haiti, where her parents owned an art gallery, and continued during her adolescence in Laguna Beach, an art colony and a core location for art creatives in the surf and skate culture. Cindy is inspired by many types of art forms and styles. However, based on her early experiences of outsider art and art on the street, along with salvaged materials, and the surf/skate culture, you will find that is where she still likes to focus her personal coverage for Cartwheel Art.
Cindy is an art consultant, and the founder of Cartwheel Art and Cartwheel Art Tours. She is is a Downtown Los Angeles Arts District resident, a Los Angeles River Artists and Business (LARABA) board member, and Land Use Committee member and has been a guest speaker for numerous universities, art organizations, including most recently the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) for a panel discussion on murals. She’s also been a host committee member for the LA Art Show, while producing and curating numerous art shows and events, along with being a guest juror for a handful of art competitions.
It’s with Cartwheel Art Tours, where she creates specialized immersive and insider experiences as custom and and unique tour itineraries for private groups and organizations. Her speciality is in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District, where Cartwheel Art Tours is based. It’s through her knowledge and passion about the Downtown Los Angeles Art District with its sense of community, artists, and speciality /artisan businesses, the murals and the street art and graffiti, the urban feel with the architectural and landscape mix of repurposed warehouses, buildings and the bridges, that her enthusiasm for providing tours comes through.
