Save the Date: “See/Saw” with Siegfried Tieber Presented by Atlas Obscura at Civic Center Studios in DTLA – September 14th through October 8th
Atlas Obscura presents See/Saw, an evening with performer and award-winning magician Siegfried Tieber. Opening on Thursday, September 14, 2017 and running for four weeks, Tieber will play host, historian, and illusionist as he guides intimate audiences on an unconventional journey. An immersion into a magician’s mind, See/Saw is an invitation to take a closer look at the art of conjuring with playing cards: a contemporary take on an ancient art form, where the important question isn’t how, but why. This limited engagement will take place at Civic Center Studios in Downtown Los Angeles. Our host’s ambition is to share (and infect us with) his passion for a beautiful but often misunderstood art form.
Directed by Magic Castle/Academy of Magical Arts magician Jon Armstrong, See/Saw will run from September 14 through October 8, 2017; six shows per week, over four days each week. There will be one 7:00 to 9:00pm show every Thursday through Sunday with a late-show on Fridays from 10:00pm to 12:00am and matinées each Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Civic Center Studios – located at 207 South Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012 – is a secret hideaway nestled inside the historic core of Downtown Los Angeles. Formerly the office of criminal defense attorney Max Solomon (Bugsy Siegel and Mickey Cohen’s lawyer), today this brick and steel den is a production studio and cultural center for artists and musicians. Find the hidden entrance in the parking lot next to the subterranean speakeasy, Birds & Bees. Tickets will cost $74 per person. Recommended ages for audience members is 16+. “In our culture, we are often exposed to film and theatre and music and dance—all these glorious, beautiful, inspiring means of expression,” Ecuadorian-born, Los Angeles-based Tieber explains. “However, most people don’t often encounter magic performed live. In order to appreciate the enormous potential of this fascinating, deep, complex art form, it has to be experienced up close.”
THE EXPERIENCE –
Card Magic has been lauded as “the poetry of magic.” Due to its versatility and range, the deck of cards is paralleled with the piano. More than mere printed pieces of paper, this instrument embodies chance, chaos and luck. See/Saw is an invitation to take a closer look at the art of conjuring with playing cards: an immersive experience, an intimate audience – sleeves rolled up.
Much more than a traditional entertainment, this is an interactive experience. Our host takes us by the hand – metaphorically, that is – through an evening that integrates an exploration of the environment, a private performance and a candid conversation about the art of magic.
SIEGFRIED TIEBER (Host & Performer) –
Siegfried Tieber is a Los Angeles-based performer and sleight-of-hand magician. He was born and raised in Ecuador, where his passion for magic began. His first international appearance was in 2011 in Bogotá, Colombia. In 2015, Tieber headlined at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the largest arts festival in the world, where his performance was highly praised (and awaraded!) by critics and media outlets. Recently, he was invited to be part of Penn & Teller: Fool Us, a television series celebrating magic. Tieber’s appearance, which ran on the CW Network’s August 3rd episode called “50/50 Chance” (official | Wiki | IMBd), saw him “fool” the legendary performance duo (check out the 10 minute clip here). As such, Tieber was invited to perform on stage in Las Vegas as the closing act for his idols’ long-running live show at the Rio on Sunday, August 27, 2017.
Siegfried is a member and regular performer at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood – an exclusive private club for the Academy of Magical Arts. Although he has appeared in a few film productions and collaborated with numerous organizations, his heart is in performing close-up magic in front of live audiences – always with his sleeves rolled up.
JON ARMSTRONG (Artistic Director) –
Jon Armstrong is an internationally acclaimed sleight-of-hand artist, lecturer, and consultant – not to mention a superstar in the magic community. He has received numerous honors including ‘Close Up Magician of the Year’ awarded by the world famous Magic Castle/Academy of Magical Arts, where he is a regular performer. http://www.cardjon.com
