Cartwheel Art is pleased to be a cultural partner in a very exciting multi-media event this weekend – one that is packed with live sports action, art, live music, DJ’s, performance art, food, shopping, and FUN!

Antonio Pelayo Productions invites you to experience a premiere live Lucha Libre event “LA BULLA” on Saturday, June 16th  at Plaza de La Raza, 3540 North Mission Road, Los Angeles. Your hosts for the evening will be Tania Estrada & Anthony “Citric” Campos, who will entertain you throughout the evening as they introduce each act.

The main event, of course, is the exciting Lucha wrestling matches curated by Masked Republic, starting at 8 pm on the main stage. Make sure you are on time to catch the opening match between El Cheetah & Koto Hiro vs The Bomb Squad! Another highlight and special-attraction match pairs Mano & Alacrana vs Sr. Valiente & La Sirena. Although we all love the fast-pace of this high-flying style of Mexican professional wrestling, this night is about so much more than just these masked luchadores!

This LA BULLA is also a tribute to Mil Mascaras, “Man of a Thousand Masks,” a legendary wrestler who is credited with introducing the high-flying moves of Lucha Libre to audiences around the world. Although he will not be present himself as was originally planned, his presence will be everywhere, as his dominance and the popularity of the masked Lucha athletes has inspired and influenced artists for decades. This year, the art exhibit curated by Antonio Pelayo & co-curated by Tatevik Tania Zatikian will feature OVER 80 artists who have created, painted and decorated masks inspired by the great Mil Mascaras!  Presenting an amazing diversity of dynamic style, bold color usage and varying artistic techniques, this massive display of Lucha masks proves the impact and importance of the sport in Chicano culture. There will also be a Live Art Competition by Sicknature Studios, where eight artists will compete for a first-place award of $500. Hosted by Marco Antonio Velasco with Music by DJ 247 Dlo.

Here are a few examples of the masks created by local artists to celebrate this tradition within the sport of Mexican wrestling…

To add to the sensory overload, there is a photography exhibit featuring a dozen local photographers, screenings of Lucha Libre films by Kenneth Castillo, a fashion show organized by Lorena Valdez, DJ sets by DJ Javier Gonzalez and a headlining musical performance by QUITA PENAS. Be prepared to do some shopping, because in addition to the art and photography galleries, there will also be a vendor marketplace and food and beer for sale. (NOTE This is a 21-and-older event.)
