SAVE THE DATE: Opening of Larry Bell’s “Complete Cubes,” Mary Heilmann’s “Memory Remix” and more at Hauser & Wirth – Saturday June 23
On Saturday, June 23, Hauser & Wirth are holding an opening reception for their summer exhibitions, which run through September 23. Larry Bell’s “Complete Cubes” will be on display in the North A Gallery. This is the first show to present Bell’s glass cubes in every size that the acclaimed California Minimalist produced over the course of a career spanning nearly 60 years. Bell is one of the most influential artists to emerge from the LA art scene of the 1960s, a decade during which he worked alongside Light and Space artists Robert Irwin and John McCracken, and in tandem with New York Minimalists Donald Judd and Frank Stella. His unique response to the extravagant, fractured light of Los Angeles has rendered an oeuvre of powerful, distinctive work that continues to explore the optic possibilities of sculpture.
Mary Heilmann’s first Los Angeles solo exhibition in over 20 years, “Memory Remix” will be featured in the North B Gallery. This comprehensive survey of paintings, ceramics, and furniture celebrates the artist’s unwavering dedication to engaging abstractions replete with sly references to her favorite landscapes, pop songs, and Mexican weavings. Heilmann deploys the analytical geometries of Minimalism with the spontaneous freehanded spirit of the Beat Generation and the influences of American pop culture, yielding a wholly original and pioneering oeuvre. Her deft handlings of paint and compositions merging dichotomous spatial environments have influenced a younger generation of artists, including Laura Owens, Ingrid Calame, and Monique Prieto.
On Saturday, Hauser & Wirth is also launching “Self Portrait with Satellites,” a commemorative survey of Jack Whitten’s work, and the first L.A. exhibition devoted to the artist in nearly 30 years; a solo exhibition by British photographer Sir Don McCullin, whose indelible images of war from around the world and of social strife in his home country have generated international acclaim; and “Portable Art, a Project by Celia Forner,” a display of objects created by various artists that exist somewhere between sculpture and bodily adornment.
