SAVE THE DATE: Fabrik Expo Art Fair and Photo Independent – Friday, October 5, to Sunday, October 7
Two international art exhibitions—Fabrik Expo Art Fair and Photo Independent—open at The Reef in DTLA on Friday, October 5, 2018. Cartwheel Art is a media partner for both events, and this year, we’re also bringing our programming and curatorial expertise to Fabrik Expo as presenters for the Experience Lounge. Join us for “The Sereal Killers,” an immersive art activation by VALTD that addresses how women are portrayed in the media.
Chris Davies, founder and director of Fabrik Media, which organizes the events, says, “We are about empowering all kinds of creative expression.” Fabrik Expo started three years ago at Willow Studios in the Arts District to bring together artists, makers, and collaborators from around the world and provide a platform to present and promote their work. Photo Independent started in 2014 to bridge the gap between the people who love and collect photography and the artists who create it. For both events, Davies told Cartwheel, “We try to bring in works that haven’t been seen before.”
The centerpiece of Fabrik Expo 2018 is the Skulpturengarten, an indoor sculpture exhibition curated by Ichiro Irie and featuring freestanding works by innovative, emerging to mid-career artists from Los Angeles and around the world. Davies says, “It’s going to be a pretty amazing exhibition, one of the largest that I think LA has seen as far as the total number of sculptors showing their works in one place.” Participating artists include Jeff Colson, Pontus Willfors, Shusuke Ao, Rochelle Botello, Anibal Catalan, Martin Durazo, Lauren Fejarang, Ashley Hagen, Kellan Barnebey King, Jason Manley, and Abdul Mazid, to name a few.

Another highlight of this year’s Fabrik Expo Art Far is the Experience Lounge. This space, presented by Cartwheel Art, features an art activation entitled “The Sereal Killers” by art duo VALTD. Jacquelyn and Brian of VALTD will share work from this series, which addresses how women are treated by the media and the media-obsessed public. Throughout the exhibit, visitors will have the opportunity to be photographed and transformed into Sereal Killers by VALTD, enabling them to experience that media manipulation firsthand. At Fabrik Expo’s opening night party, the Experience Lounge will be serving cocktails featuring craft vodka from Los Angeles’ Infuse Spirits.

Meanwhile, at Photo Independent, Jerry Weber’s photography will be a focal point. Davies says, “He is going to be showcasing drag queens in his exhibit, and quite a few of the drag queens are going to be coming during the course of the opening and the rest of the weekend.”
