Inspired by the success of our November 2011 exhibition entitled RED, The Loft at Liz’s announces “Alchemy” – a group exhibition strategically focusing on the color “gold”. From statements of value and prestige throughout recorded history to our elemental reliance in modern technology, this show will examine the variety of meanings behind the color and it’s usage in visual art.
Alchemy is defined as any magical power or process of transmutation to turn a common substance, usually of little value, into a substance of great value. A form of chemistry or speculative philosophy practiced in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, alchemy is principally concerned with discovering methods for transmuting base materials into gold and finding a universal solvent or elixir of life.
