The only woman in the LA street art scene when began in the early 1990s, becca‘s work stood out for its content and style: waifish girls, often with cuts and scrapes staring mutely. Her work was mysterious, disturbing, and moved her off building walls and into galleries (she took a break for a couple years to teach painting and drawing at Virginia Commonwealth University, and to and cook and waited tables at Mamma Zu, Richmond Virgina’s beloved Italian restaurant). Since then, becca’s girls have grown up a bit–instead of torn dresses and scraped knees, fashionable ensembles seen on Mad Men and Bewitched are seen.
Philip Lumbang‘s charming bears join becca’s almost-grown-up girls in a show that meshes whimsy and wit at Copro through May 11.
