Artworks from southern California “MANA” artists, who are the subject of the new documentary film currently in production by Eric Minh Swenson, will be for sale on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Garboushian Gallery. Art sales are 100 percent in fundraising support of the film, which will chronicle a tightly bonded community of southern California artists who share the skill and affinity of surfing; their love of, and interactions with the dynamics of the ocean inform their artwork. They share the common bond of the unseen mana (power) of the land and sea.

Filmmaker Swenson will also be showcasing limited edition signed photographs, available for $100 donation, and he will also be providing custom live portrait photography at Thursday’s gallery event.

In the feature length documentary, the artists will be interviewed in their Los Angeles studios as well as while working, surfing and living on location in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The film will feature private studio sessions, interviews, and events and ceremonies around the Big Island during the month of July, 2013. While on location in Kailua-Kona, the artists will feature their work at Donkey Mill Art Center with an lecture/panel on July 11, 2013. Shooting in the spirit of Terrance Malick and Werner Herzog, the film will convey a serene, meditative mood where Zen philosophy, art principles, bravery and humility form a cohesive narrative of what will undoubtedly become one of the most ambitious and celebrated films created on southern California art, surf culture and history. The film will also be débuted and screened in coordination with a major Los Angeles museum exhibition featuring the art of these ten influential artists: Craig Skibs Barker, Casper Brindle, Ben Brough, Alex Couwenberg, Ned Evans, Steven Fuchs, Eric Johnson, David Lloyd, Ken Pagliaro, and Alex Weinstein.
