The Skirball Center presents the first major museum exhibition of the life and work of the astounding Gary Baseman, opening April 25, 2013. Baseman’s creative universe comes alive with paintings, photographs, textiles, toys, sketchbooks, and videos presented in a setting that recalls his family home in Los Angeles’ Fairfax district, with furniture and memorabilia from his personal collection. “Gary Baseman: The Door Is Always Open” explores the influences of Baseman’s Jewish family heritage and American popular culture on his exuberant, boundary-defying art, which celebrates Baseman’s dynamic vision and inspires visitors to discover the creativity within themselves.

For opening night, you’re invited to Gary Baseman’s House Party: Gary Baseman will paint a spontaneous new artwork while Nightmare and the Cat—“a rock ’n’ roll force to be reckoned with,” says the New York Times—plays live in the Skirball’s spectacular central courtyard.  Shepard Fairey is the DJ and there will be art-making activities, late-night gallery tours, and cash bars serving specialty cocktails.

The cover charge for opening night is $15 in advance; $20 at the door. You must be 21+, with valid ID, to attend the opening the night.

“Gary Baseman: The Door Is Always Open” runs through August 18th, 2013.  Members are welcome to view the event in a preview on April 25. General admission  during the exhibition run April 26-August 18, 2013 is free for members for is $10 General, $7 Seniors and Full-Time Students $5 Children 2–12. The museum is free to all on Thursdays.
