As part of LA Weekly’s Artopia programming, join Cartwheel Art Tours with “Insiders,” founder Cindy Schwarzstein and Steve Grody, author of Graffiti LA, for a FREE urban adventure on the streets outside of The Container Yard. This urban adventure has been created for participants to discover, explore and experience what was once a gritty section filled with disused warehouses, train tracks and manufacturing plants by the L.A. River, to what is now rapidly becoming the hippest and most vibrant and dynamic art-centric part of Los Angeles–the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District, where Cartwheel Art is based.
DISCOVER: The street and graffiti art of the Arts District, where over 100 murals have been painted by internationally well-known artists, emerging artists and graffiti crews from Los Angeles and now with the passing of the Los Angeles City Mural Ordinance in 2013, the stage has been set for more murals, as public art, to be created in order for LA to reclaim its title as “the mural capital of the world.”
EXPLORE: the area’s unique industrial, avant-garde historical cultural history; how the mazes of warehouses were converted to legal live/work loft spaces in the 1980’s, when the City of Los Angeles recognized that artists had moved into abandoned spaces and converted them into lofts; and about the future project developments.
EXPERIENCE: significant historical points of interest along with artisan and creative businesses that make up the new manufacturing and industry of the Arts District.
Cartwheel Art Tours offers a unique “Insiders” perspective for participants on their urban adventures by combining resident Cindy Schwarzstein’s enthusiasm for supporting the artists and businesses in the district, along with her passion for the art in the streets and the insight and knowledge she has in the community, as a board member of Los Angeles River Artists and Business Association (LARABA) and other organizations, and Steve Grody’s knowledge of the graffiti lettering and styles, and who is deeply respected by the graffiti community and who lived and has photographed in the neighborhood for 27 years, that offers to participants a deep “insider” connection to the art and history.
