Palette Cleanser: Fall Group Exhibition at C.A.V.E. Gallery

Has the Los Angeles summer art season exhausted you? Have the crushing throngs of fashionista scenesters tested your patience? Has it all left a slightly bitter taste of pretension in your mouth? As usual, C.A.V.E Gallery has just the antidote with their palette cleansing annual “Fall Group Exhibition.” The show features over a dozen artists, and pretty much exemplifies what this gallery does best.  They simply show quality art in a warm,  welcoming venue. You won’t find a lot of posturing at C.A.V.E. Gallery. You won’t be glared at, and you won’t feel underdressed. It’s Venice after all.

The “Fall Group Exhibition” is a wildy varied collection of work. You have Radical! offering up his raw, dark whimsy in small scale alongside much larger works like the mixed media cityscapes by Resitution Press and Max Neutra’s giant giraffe piece, Communion. If you missed the opening on Saturday night though, you also missed Neutra live painting one of his signature bunnies. Rafael Delgado and Joka are art illusionists. Delgado’s bright and lavish “paintings” are actually constructed out of strips of colored paper, while Joka’s exquisite “brushstrokes” are achieved using toothpicks.  Seoul born  Young Chun paints intensely detailed, somewhat disturbing,  portraits of children seemingly in the throws of a fever dream, or perhaps their just really, really good at playing dress-up. Hans Haveron’s Dragon’s Pearl is a work of lush surrealism in delicate gray tones. Surprisingly, even though the show also features work by Shaunna Peterson, Pat Perry, John Park, Brandon Boyd, Sophie Bastien, Codak, and others, it doesn’t feel crowded, or cluttered. It’s all hung quite thoughtfully, which makes the space seem bigger than it is. The show doesn’t feel overloaded, though it easily could have.

The opening just so happened to be in conjuction with the autumnal equinox, which brought with it a staggeringly gorgeous purple sunset over Venice. All of which seemed to be closing the door on a particularly taxing summer, and giving way to the earthy promise of the new season. C.A.V.E. Gallery is always looking forward.

The Fall Group Exhibition runs through October 14, 2012.
