UAM CSULB – Songbirds of Today and a History Lesson from Long Ago
Apologies for not including the decoder ring in the title, but UAM CSULB stands for University Art Museum at California State University Long Beach …whew! It’s a hidden gem on the campus and definitely worth discovering if you get the chance. Especially since over several months they will have an offering of three different exhibits within the same space. Linda A. Day‘s Swimming in Paint – Patrick Wilson‘s Pull — and a unique historical selection of abstract paintings. I’m not a history buff by any means, but I l still loved looking at the work even though I was unaware of its importance within the realms of the world’s timeline. I think it’s more fun that way. I got to view it all without any kind of precognition as to what it meant, so I could only be jaded by my own love of the movement in every stroke and not a lemming’s edge fall of saccharine wonder.
Linda A. Day wields a powerful wand of texture and color, even on fragile materials like cardboard. Her installation in the entrance to the space was like an elegant dress designed with lights and shaken parts that brought a very DIY spirit to the room, while on the other side of the museum Patrick Wilson’s quadratic rules reminded me of visual representations of sentences only understood by spies–confusing yet so interesting you could spend long periods of time getting lost in what was actually either there or only in your imagination.
