PREVIEW: Printed Matter Bringing It From NY to LA Art Book Fair at MOCA-Geffen

Posted by

Thousands of books by artists will gather in one spot at the MOCA-Geffen when the first annual L A Art Book Fair, sponsored by Printed Matter, comes to town next week.

West Coast and visiting art book lovers are looking forward to the L A Art Book Fair next week at the MOCA-Geffen downtown. The first annual book fair is sponsored by Printed Matter, the legendary art bookstore based in New York. Admission is free to all events including the opening reception on Thursday evening from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. New Yorkers understand traffic; these hours are thoughtfully selected for professional downtowners and commuters alike.

The Printed Matter art book fair will feature catalogs (in and out-of-print) from such purveyors as Los Angeles’ own Dagny Corcoran’s Art Catalogues (the shop at LACMA). A huge selection of books by artists, including a special section for zines and comics is offered. The Zine World will bring together both local and visiting publishers like ANAL from Mexico; Dirty Looks, New York; Fantasy Camp, Canada; Little Joe from London, and Working Class, New York. Skateboard culture will be represented by a curated selection of Skate Fate, (1981-1991) artist books from Garry Scott Davis, aka GSD, who was also the first pro skater to be sponsored primarily for skating street.

Books by artists is a fine way to start a collection at affordable prices, and trends will be set at the fair next week. We will be looking for books by artists to feature and recommend.  Over 150 bookshops and book dealers from all over the world will participate.

Printed Matter art book experts Michael Max McLeod, left, and Shannon Cane are in LA now at the Art Los Angeles Contemporary art fair at Barker Hangar over the weekend, and move over to the L A Book Fair at MOCA Geffen next Thursday evening (1/31).

An art book (or artbook) may mean a conventional book on art or art history, or an artist’s book, which is a work of art in the form of a book, usually produced in a small limited edition, often not just using normal printing techniques. The term might also cover graphic novels, books of anime and other types of graphics, or books of fine art photography. It is not generally used for illuminated manuscripts, though these are both art and books.-
