Put twenty of street/urban artists in a brand new art space and have them go to town on your product: That’s the idea behind Red Bull Canvas Cooler Los Angeles which is taking place one night only, Thursday March 28, at Factory West, a new gallery/lounge/artists space which opens officially in April. This year, two Los Angeles artists will be voted through to join a total of fourteen from seven cities in the Red Bull Curates Canvas Cooler group exhibition this coming December in Miami during the 2013 Art Basel Season. One of last year’s LA winners, Gregory Siff, was on hand during my drop by (the other 2012 LA winners were Lydia Emily and Han Haveron), along with LA Freewalls/LALA’s Daniel Lahoda and RISK.
The judging panelists include John Heilman, Council Member, City of West Hollywood; Holly Harrison, Curatorial Administrator; Contemporary Art at LACMA; Marsea Goldberg, owner of New Image Art Gallery; and you! The public will be able to vote on their favorite piece on Thursday night. And you can also vote at selected lounges and bars across Los Angeles where completed coolers will be heading.
The artists were excited to be participating and honored to be working alongside each other. There was a lot of respect in the room and outside in the spray area of the parking lot.
Be sure to arrive early on Thursday, March 28, as the venue cannot cannot guarantee admittance through the evening due to capacity constraints. Door open at 9pm. You must be 21+ to attend. And watch CARTWHEEL for more photos from Red Bull Curates Canvas Cooler and on Factory West and their artist-in-residence program!
