Street Art: Plastic Jesus Pranks Best Buy
The tag on an item at Best Buy reads:
Useless Plasticbox 1.2″ for $99.99. Another gadget you don’t really need. Will not work once you get it home. New model out in 4 weeks. Battery life is too short to be of use. If you are dumb enough to buy it you deserve all you get.
It’s the work of street artist Plastic Jesus, a commentary on street artists’ favorite subject, consumerism (which begs the question: Why the clothing lines, endorsement deals, etc.? But that’s a whole other story). Plastic Jesus told the Los Angeles Times via email:
We are sold this equipment, often with the pre-release hype lasting many weeks, and told ‘this gadget is THE one’ the one that will change our life, only to be left disappointed.
The items were placed on shelves at Best Buys in Atwater Village/Los Feliz, Burbank, Hollywood, Sherman Oaks and West Hollywood, and some lasted several days before employees noticed them. Best Buy has not revealed if any Useless Plasticbox 1.2 were sold.
