Kent Twitchell “Above the Streets” Art Share L.A. Gala May 14
Now we can all view the work of Los Angeles’ world renown muralist, Kent Twitchell, with a series of eight billboards that bring his work to major intersections across the city, while alerting us to the upcoming “Above the Streets” gala benefiting Art Share L.A., May 14.
Twitchell, the evening’s honoree, provided eight images from his 40-year career–including two that are never-before-seen images to be displayed on a network of billboards, creating a public art exhibition throughout Los Angeles provided by Clear Channel Outdoor.
Kent Twitchell has been creating murals in Los Angeles since 1971 when he painted a 30’ tall image of Steve McQueen. Images included in the “Above the Streets” project include the famous mural portrait The Hollywood Freeway Lady, LA Chamber Orchestra, LA Marathon Runners, and Lita Albuquerque Monument. Also featured above the streets: the never-before-displayed Michael Jackson Monument and the soon-to-be painted The Return of Ed Ruscha, (Twitchell’s original Ed Ruscha was painted over amid much controversy). Prints of the images will be on display and for purchase at Above the Streets gala event. The billboards as visible at Venice @ Motor, La Cienega @ Jefferson, Wilshire @ Western, La Cienega @ Horner, Cotner @ Pico and La Cienega @ Airdrome.
Art Share L.A.’s mission is to support artists by providing a creative environment to reside, develop, perform and exhibit their works. Art Share LA’s 16-year history allows the creative arts center to be in a position to engage the new community and give them access to creative space. Art Share L.A. inspires artists and provides connection to the community for shared benefit.
“Above the Streets” will be an evening of celebration from 6:00 – 10:00PM, with a silent auction highlighting emerging artists works, passed food and cocktails provided by Traxx Restaurant, and a program with Isabel Rojas-Williams of the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles (MCLA) presenting Kent Twitchell with the Esteemed Artists Award.
Individual tickets are $50 each and sponsorship ticket packages range from $500 to $5000. Tickets are available here.
