Last Week to Experience TRACTIONARTS in the DTLA Arts District with NASA’s video of the Sun!

TRACTIONARTS has been a video venue in the heart of the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District for nearly three years, showing films from twilight to midnight. Actually, it’s been a window facing Traction Ave at the corner of Avery, between SCI-Arc’s parking lot and the new the new Arts District Brewery.

TRACTIONARTS was started by Ken Marchionno after attending a talk by Carlton Davis at the Armory Center for the Arts about the history of The Art Dock. The discussion that followed inspired Ken to use a window in the studio he shares with his wife Kim Abeles, to expose the community of the LA Arts District to new and interesting video.

It is with great sadness that we are announcing that this is the last week to experience the viewing of their video’s at TRACTIONARTS. During the last three years, Ken and Kim, with the additional support of Juan Patiño, have shown over forty-one videos, from four countries and two American Indian Reservations.

For their last video, you will experience NASA’s video of the sun. Ken indicated that this film is being shown:

Like a beautiful sunset emanating from our window, or perhaps a thermonuclear explosion burning bright to the very end—either reading is fine.

He continues:

It has been a wonderful curatorial run.

TRACTIONARTS has been showing a wonderful array of work, produced by artists all over the world, to an unsuspecting audience. As ken further describes:

It was fun to see people stumble upon the videos as they walked down Traction Ave on their way to eat pie, or get sausages and beer in the Arts District. And it has always been a particular thrill to see people standing on the sidewalk outside our studio, mesmerized by the visuals and sound coming from our unassuming window.

We are grateful for the wonderful work that they have been showing in the Arts District and for the times they have opened their studio and home to guests with Cartwheel Art Tours. We will miss seeing the films but look forward to taking them in this last week!
